OCEANSIZE - Discography [mp3 320 kbps, flac]

Oceansize were one of numerous British bands crafting epic, moody soundscapes in the post-Radiohead era. However, they couldn't be pigeonholed as a Coldplay/Travis clone; their influences ran the gamut from space rock old (Pink Floyd) and new (Mogwai, the Verve) to alternative metal (Jane's Addiction, Tool), shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver), and even the avant-garde (Can, Tortoise). Formed in Manchester, England, the band featured vocalist/guitarist Mike Vennart, guitarists Gambler and Steve Durose, bassist Jon Ellis, and drummer Mark Herrin. Quickly building a local following, they issued several independent releases -- the "Saturday Morning Breakfast Show" single, the 2000 EP Amputee, the 2001 EP A Very Still Movement -- that got them named Manchester's best unsigned band. The following year, they toured with the Cooper Temple Clause and made a well-received appearance at Texas' South by Southwest festival. That in turn piqued the interest of Beggar's Banquet, which signed Oceansize that year and quickly issued their first widely distributed EP, Relapse. A tour with Cave In followed, and in early 2003 Oceansize delivered another EP, One Day All This Could Be Yours, which served as a teaser for their first full-length and received much positive response from the press. That first album, Effloresce, arrived in the UK in September 2003, and was accompanied by a European tour with Aereogramme. Two more singles from the record, "Remember When You Are" and "Catalyst," continued to build the band's steadily growing audience. Effloresce was released stateside in spring 2004.

Manchester's Oceansize compose a mechanical flow of post-rock/experimental ticks and beats on their debut album, Effloresce. As the title aptly suggests, Effloresce bursts forth with feverish punk edges and ethereal electronics for an aggressive guitar storm. Mike Vennart (vocals/guitar), Steve Durose (guitar/vocals), Gambler (guitar), Jon Ellis (bass), and Mark Herrin (drums) seem content with the album's constant apprehension, and the shifty dynamic works. From the agonizing fury of "You Wish" and "Amputee" to the band's more eclectic and melodic instrumentals such as "I Am the Morning" and "Unravel," the momentum of Effloresce never lets up. "Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs" is a stunning heatstroke featuring Vennart and Durose's icy twin-guitar work. As it swirls into a menagerie of space rock and post-alternative rock, Vennart's aching vocals only accentuate the buildup of what is the album's finest moment. The dozen-track set list is loaded from start to finish, sonically and emotionally; however, Oceansize basically rely on the strength of their individual playing to carry the weight of Effloresce. While most of the songs are individually interesting, the album's overall composition is rather lacking. Oceansize do have potential and Effloresce does show promise, but its arrangement isn't as thought-out as it could be.

With their moody alt-rock sound, it might be tempting to lump this quintet in with British bands like Coldplay and Travis, who rushed to fill the void when Radiohead turned its back on commercial accessibility. But one listen to the Manchester-based band's sophomore LP makes it clear that they're charting a rockier course, with prog influences that run the gamut from Pink Floyd to Tool. The throbbing tribal pulse of "The Charm Offensive" recalls Jane's Addiction if they'd been fronted by Layne Staley, with stilted rhythms, shoegazing guitars, and harmonized vocals used to craft an arty epic that straddles the line dividing art rock and metal. They have an obvious understanding of the power of dynamics: "A Homage to a Shame" cranks up the distortion for a stutter-stepping, neck-snapping groove clearly designed to incite mosh pit ferocity, and then "Meredith" abandons that intensity in favor of melody, featuring a sultry beat topped with trippy layers of shimmering guitars and echoing vocals. But what's missing from Oceansize's sound is the sort of memorable lyrical or melodic hooks listeners can latch onto. The result is a pleasant enough ride for those in search of an occasionally transcendent aural experience, but like Jim Carrey's and Kate Winslet's characters in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it's a colorful voyage you probably won't wind up remembering much about in the end.

Frames is the third studio album by British alternative rock band Oceansize, released on 1 October 2007. The album is their first with bassist Steven Hodson, since John Ellis's departure in 2005.
The ink drawings, featured in the album's artwork, are by Nine Inch Nails and Guns N' Roses guitarist, Robin Finck.
An alternative edition of the album containing bonus track 'Voorhees' is available on general sale and from Amazon.co.uk.
In May 2008, the band re-released the album with an accompanying DVD, featuring a full performance of the album, a documentary focusing on the making of the album, and various live tracks. The package also includes an Oceansize sticker.
The band will play the album in full on October 18, 2008 in Manchester as part of a trilogy of shows celebrating the band's ten year anniversary.
