3 hours and 40 minutes on two discs is Steve Vai’s latest offering with Where the Wild Things Are, filmed in Minneapolis in Sept 2007. The amount of material on the disc indicates why it took two years to come out.
The sound of the DVD is fantastic in stereo and I just wish I had the capabilities to hear it in Dolby 5.1. The audio commentary is also very informative and not something you get often on a live release.
Vai’s set is as varied and as crazy as you’d come to expect from this guitar wielding maniac and the songs Building the Church, Fire Wall and Apples In Paradise are a must see as well as Jeremy Colson’s talking portable drum kit "The Beast".
The disc is jam packed with stuff from his own little thought bubbles appearing throughout (which is a fantastic idea) to the various special effects used in production. In the extras department you can find interviews with all the band members and a demo of Vai’s new Jemini distortion pedal by the Steve Vai twins which is great fun to watch.
Vai is a guy who has fun with whatever he does and it clearly shows in the DVD, from his live buffoonery in between the serious stuff and the funny thought bubbles throughout. With all his fans Vai could easily release a bare bones DVD and still sell a shitload but he enjoys what he does and this is a product he’ll be proud of.
I think anyone reading this will know Steve Vai for his insanely good guitar wankery, while less famous are his spot on James Brown dance moves.Vai puts on a fantastic live show and it's only fitting that such a technically gifted guitarist is shown here in such a technically meticulous production.
